Project Description

In the established Wildewood neighborhood of Columbia, South Carolina, Despres Painting completed a detailed built-in bookshelf painting project designed to transform existing white cabinetry into a bold architectural focal point.

The work focused exclusively on the living room’s integrated shelving system, a prominent feature that anchors the space visually and functionally.

Over the course of one carefully managed week, our team executed full cabinet surface preparation, refinishing, and protective coating application, delivering a premium furniture-grade result at an overall investment between $3,000 and $5,000.

Although modest in physical size compared to whole-home renovations, the visual importance of the built-ins required an exceptionally high level of craftsmanship. These shelves sit at eye level, frame décor and books, and influence the tone of the entire room. Any imperfection would be immediately visible.

Because of this, the project demanded precision sanding, flawless coating control, and a finish engineered for durability, ensuring the final appearance would feel refined rather than simply repainted.

Background Story

For Kimiko and her husband, the living room already had strong architectural character. The custom built-in bookshelves were beautifully constructed, proportioned well, and positioned perfectly within the space. Yet their original white finish caused them to disappear into the surrounding trim, muting their visual impact and leaving the room without a clear focal point.

They envisioned something different. Something deeper, richer, and more intentional. A finish that would elevate the shelves from background structure to statement design element. At the same time, they carried understandable concerns. Choosing a dark color on cabinetry raises questions about surface durability, smoothness, and long-term wear. Brush marks, uneven sheen, or premature chipping would quickly diminish the effect they hoped to achieve. Their expectation was simple but demanding. Perfection in both appearance and performance.

From the beginning, Despres Painting approached the project with careful listening and technical clarity. We explained the refinishing process, the coating technology, and the preparation steps required to achieve a true furniture-quality finish. By aligning craftsmanship with the homeowners’ design vision, the project shifted from uncertainty to excitement.

What once felt like a risk became a confident step toward redefining the entire living room.

Scopes of Services

  • Built-in bookshelf refinishing: complete living room shelving system, including vertical panels, shelving surfaces, and trim-integrated components

  • Cabinet-grade surface preparation: sanding, cleaning, and conditioning of all bookshelf substrates to ensure smooth coating adhesion

  • Fine finish application: controlled spraying and finishing techniques to achieve an even, professional sheen across visible surfaces

  • Protective topcoat integration: durability-focused coating layers designed for everyday contact, décor movement, and long-term color stability

Products Used

  • ICRO 5000 Water-based 2K Polyurethane: applied to all bookshelf surfaces to provide exceptional durability, chemical resistance, and a smooth furniture-grade finish

  • Custom tint to Sherwin-Williams SW 6237 Dark Knight: deep charcoal-blue tone used to transform the white built-ins into a bold architectural accent while maintaining elegance within the living room palette

Results

The transformation was immediate yet sophisticated. Where the shelves once blended quietly into the trim, they now stand as a rich, regal centerpiece that anchors the entire living room. The Dark Knight finish introduces depth and contrast without overwhelming the space, allowing décor, books, and lighting to feel more intentional and curated.

Equally important is the quality of the surface itself. Smooth to the touch. Even in sheen. Free from visible brush or roller texture. The water-based 2K polyurethane system ensures the beauty of the finish is matched by real-world durability, capable of withstanding everyday use while maintaining its refined appearance over time.

For Kimiko and her husband, the completed project delivered more than a color change. It reshaped how the living room feels. The shelves now provide a sense of structure, elegance, and personality that was previously missing. Their initial concerns about dark color durability and flawless execution were not only addressed but fully surpassed.

This project reflects a core belief shared by Despres Painting. Even smaller-scale refinishing work deserves meticulous preparation, premium materials, and uncompromising attention to detail. Because when craftsmanship is done correctly, a single feature such as a built-in bookshelf can transform the character of an entire home.
